(except, of course, with more advanced cognitive and self-awareness properties). I just re-considered this after reading how pandas go through an obvious depression after loss of loved ones (e.g. http://msnbc.msn.com/id/14726425/?GT1=8506)

we are very much the same. chimps and pet dogs and cats go through the same thing - grieving after the loss of a loved one. read the story of greyfriar's bobby.

we still have the same instincts as a lot of wild animals do, too.

I honestly don't think that pandas give a crap about that sort of thing. They can't really comprehend it. No offence to animal lovers (I love animals a lot, trust me) but I don't think that animals feel love the same way that we do. We complicate everything, and animals don't. Therefore, I don't think panda's overanalyze a loss... they probably get over it within a minute or two.

many animals do go through a depressed stage after a loss of a loved one. they become attached as we do (those that dont have multiple partners). i had 3 dogs, when 1 died the other 2 were quite settled for a long time, eventually they got over it, however another 1 had died recently and my dog is still just kinda moping around. =\

We are alike in our adaptation to this planet and its conditions.

Part of this is self-preservation, which animals have, and this is shown in the strong family instinct of many of the so-called "higher" animals, mainly mammals.

No humans are not the same as animals. Reality check needed. Animals are born with knowledges and can't learn very much. Humans are born with no knowledge and learn to eternity.

that is correct, we are the same - our assumptions of superiority are really just an attempt to justify the horrible way we treat animals (and the rest of nature.
