Hi There,
There is really no reason to go out an buy any programs when it comes to getting rid of spyware. The tools that do the best job are free.
That being said, it's not alway a simple task and it could take you a few hours to completely get rid of the spyware (some of it just doesn't want to go away and stay away)
First thing, you should go to the control panel. Double Click on "system" then on the tab that says "system restore". Turn system restore OFF. (You will turn it back on later)
Start off by downloading these three spyware removal tools.
1. Spybot Search & Destroy
http://www.safer-networking.org/
2. Adaware
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
3. Ewido
http://www.ewido.net/en/
You will want to install each one of these programs, run updates on all of them to make sure they are up to date. Also, If you don't already have an Antivirus program running (and you should) you will want to get one of those. The best free on in my opinion is AVG. You can download that at http://free.grisoft.com
If you will be using AVG, then install it and run the updates.
Once you are finished with that, you will want to unhook your computer from the internet. If you have high speed interent, just unplug the cable that runs from your cable/dsl modem to your computer. If you have dialup, remove the telephone cable from the computer.
Now it's time to run all those programs you just installed and updated.
This will take a while. However, don't get back on the internet until you have run all these programs.
That should take care of any spyware/viruses that are on your computer.
When you are finished, you can uninstall Adaware and Ewido (go to the control panel and then add/remove programs).
Leave Spybot Search & Destroy on your computer and use the "immunize" function found in that program. That will help eliminate some future spyware problems.
Now go back the the control panel. Double Click on "system" then the "system restore" tab and turn system restore back on.
See how that works for you. I am a computer technician at my "day job" and this will get rid of most spyware problems.
There are some that are more complicated. If you go through all these steps and the spyware comes back when you get back on the internet, post a new question and I would be more the willing to help you solve that problem.

Webroot Spy Sweeper is one of the best paid programs to remove spyware.
http://www.webroot.com/
But I have been using freeware solutions for years with great success. Why not try some of these?
Here you are:
Pick and choose at least 2 from the list below. New spywares are created literally hourly, so no single anti-spyware can really detect all malware. Have at least 2 on hand and alternate scanning with each every few days or so. All are free. All can remove as well as detect.
Spybot Search and Destroy:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html
Ewido:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Adaware SE:
http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/
A-Squared:
http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/
Windows Defender (Beta 2):
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
Unfortunately, many "paid for" anti-spyware products are in fact either of limited usefulness or downright scams. When in doubt, look at the list of rogue anti-spyware solutions listed here:
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm
And to protect your computer from ever getting infected with spyware in the first place, you can use these 2 freebies:
SpywareBlaster:

SiteAdvisor:

Actually, some freeware products (like Spybot S&D) have consistently been BETTER (not just as good as, but superior to) commerical options. Microsoft'e beta Antispyware was pretty effective, but their updates became tiresome.
Spybot is no longer the best program available, but it's still quite good. Webroot Spysweeper is excellent, and heck- you can even pay for it :)
