It seems to me that many beliefs are an archaic attempt to render the believers somehow immortal.

Religion is the ultimate con, it is government protected, tax free and the product they sell doesn't have to be delivered until you reach a place that doesn't exist. No wonder so many people jump on this manured money wagon.

What about the many beliefs that are not attempts to render "believers" immortal? For example, consider ceremonies for successful hunts.

Religion has always been an archaic attempt to explain the unexplainable.

Water fall from sky. This mean there is God.

In my opinion, fear of death isn't so much the reason religion, at least christian religion, was formed. It seems to me that the commandments are a basic list of laws that one should live by and heaven and hell are your rewards or punishments to receive accordingly at death. The Bible, to me, is a book of stories to live by. They teach life lessons and good morals. It's a way to make people believe that is how they MUST live their lives if they don't want eternal damnation without them feeling they are being controlled by someone else (besides god). In the end, It's a simple scare-tactic to keep people in line. "If you do this wrong, you will go to hell......If you live this way, you will spend eternity in heavenly bliss"

no...I think self-awareness did. When one becomes self-aware, one is disturbed by the concept of where that awareness comes from and what happens to it at the end of physical life. Further, one must question what the purpose of life is. To conclude that awareness rises from nothing, is reduced to nothing at death and there is no point to existence is a recipe for insanity. Thus, to explain the inconceivable and unknowable, religion is created.

I think some people do believe that. They have convinced themselves of a god because it means they will go to 'heaven' when they die. I don't see this as a bad thing if it helps them enjoy life fully.

no, but curiosity about death probably helped give rise to religion.

not all religions give much thought to life after death, you know.

One faith was brought about due to the fear of God rather than the fear of death.
