It really depends upon how much they drank. Some alcoholics have consumed so much, for so long, it's in their hair and bones! They'll have a longer "detox" time. In a rehab, they monitor the patient, and administer low-level tranquilizers, like Librium, to quel "the shakes" (delerium tremens), and anti-seizure meds, if those develop, which they can.

Keep in mind that every rehab facility is different, in their treatment and policies. The ones visited by the stars are quite a bit more posh than those the average person's insurance would pay for!

Usually, once they detox, they go through group counseling, AA meetings and often individual therapy. Some are prescripbed anti-depressants, since that might have contributed to the drinking. Drinking itself causes depression.

AA only has about a 50% success rate, so if the alcoholic doesn't do well with that after rehab, he/she might look into substance abuse counseling, or other types of support groups.

Sadly, very few alcoholics 1st visit to rehab will be their last one!
