The only legal requirements for an 8-ball rack according to BCA rules, are that the 8 ball is to be placed in the center of the third row and the back corners have to be of different suits, one stripe and one solid. All other balls are placed at random. "johns_game_account" was correct in his answer, but a few points need to be clarified. He deserves the points, though. The apex ball is to be racked on the foot spot. All balls in the rack should be touching their neighbors. Although it is conventional for some to alternate stripes and solids throughout the rack, it is not a legal requirement. Also, only in IPT rules is it required to have the 1 ball as the apex ball, although many routinely place it there. M.D.-BCA Instructor/Referee.
