My 10mo. TerriPoo has allergies - she's constantly sneezing whenever we go for walks. Is it okay if I give her one benadryl a day w/o having taking her to the Vet? My Vet is way too expensive.
Thank you.

My Xena is 10mo. and 12-15lbs.
She has not other issues - vomiting, itching, diahrrea, urinating. She's pretty much okay in every other aspect.

This question does not require a visit to the vet. But DO make a phone call and make an inquiry.
Look on line for reputable pet sites and see if you can find more information on dog(?) allergies.
Do not medicate your dog without professional advice.

Call your vet and let him/her know that you suspect allergies and you would like to try Benedryl before bringing her in. Ask for the correct dosage and let the vet know that you will bring her in if the Benedryl has no effect. You can give Benedryl up to 3 times a day for allergies, but you need to make sure you are giving the correct dose. Also, some antihistamines work better than others so if Benedryl doesn't work, consider using Chlorphiniramine, Tavist or Hydroxazine. As long as she is otherwise normal (no vomiting, diarrhea, coughing, sneezing at other times, is eating and drinking ok, normal urination, etc.) it's most likely just a mild inhalent allergy.

Benadryl is fine in the short term... what does she weigh? usually dogs under 20lbs should take 1/2 of a 25mg and over 30lbs can usually take a whole one. Expect some drowsiness though.
Long term you need to speak with your vet about it and other possible options. Some allergies can be controlled without medication. I don't know the long-term effects of benadryl in dogs, it's probably safe, but I am still in school (vet school) and I can't give you a guarantee on using it every day.
Honestly, for a few days it is perfectly fine, but if you're seeking a long term solution talk to her vet about it...
For the record, the literature reads the dosing of diphenhydramine (benadryl) in a canine as 2-4mg/kg. A kg is 2.2lbs and you always want to start with the minimum dose.

A call to the vet will get your answer. You CAN give dogs benedryl, in fact I've been told by more than one vet that it's okay.
They can tell you the dose that is okay for your dog. You can overdose them on it, so be sure you ask the vet for dosage before giving any.

You should talk to the vet, but I do give my terrier mix of 12 lbs half of a 25mg benadryl at night for his allergies.

my vet told me to give my jrterrier mix, who weighs 30 lbs, benadryl, 25 mg, 1 in am, 1 in pm, for flea bites--we live in ft. worth. TX and the fleas have been unusually bad this yr, due to abnormally high temperatures. he gave my dog a shot to relieve him quickly, and never gave any indication that Benadryl was dangerous to dogs---i bought a bottle of 100 pills at Walmart--equate brand--generic--25mg for $ 3.44--i use them also--compare your dogs weight to my dogs of 30 lbs, and call your vet--if he cannot answer your question over the phone--get a new vet !!! good luck to you !!!

The dose for benedryl is 1 mg per 10 pounds any regular pill would be an overdose for a dog that size. As long as it's just sneezing not hives or other breathing difficulty just wait for the pollens to go down.

yes that is ok, but you should call the vet and see how much of the benedryl you can give her (1/2 pill, 1 pill, etc.)

My dog is on Benadryl occasioanlly, but he gets one capsule and he's 70 lbs...you need a vet to help you....you shouldn't have a pet if you can't afford to care for it properly.
