Not all guys are like that, of course. But those who do are usually just acting out subconscious biological programming.
Humans have been on the earth for millions of years, but the first actual cities started appearing only about 8 thousand years ago. So in many respects, we're still a tribal people, and our brains are playing "catch-up" with the ideas of civilization and equality.
In male-dominated tribal societies, the strongest males usually get their pick of the healthiest (e.g. most attractive) mates and the best living conditions (most food, biggest houses, most servants, etc.).
Evolution seems to have been set up this way to make it more likely that the strongest, most assertive lifeforms (the "most successful", in biological terms) have the best chance to survive and pass along their "superior" DNA (although it's a sobering thought that the world may one day be populated exclusively by newspaper editors, steel magnates, and heads of movie studios).

There are several reasons for this:
1. Testosterone levels are much higher in males - Increased tendency for violence or aggressive behavior is directly correlated with testosterone amounts. (are just acting like a jerk)
2. One reason is the male ego - it constantly needs to be bolstered.
3. SEX - they think they are attracting the opposite sex by acting this way (but I guess that sex goes hand in hand with the high testosterone levels and the male ego).
