Well... Which one is the best ?
For me: I love hickory and apple wood.
You have to try a couple of them and see which one develops in your opinion the best flavor of what you are grilling. Some types that I have use that I like as well are maple,. mesquite and orange tree.

I would say either mesquite or hickory. Both give a good smokey flavor without overdoing it. The best way is to use charcoal, but make sure you soak the wood really well before throwing it on the coals. I would say at least 24 hours and it will smoke great and give lots of flavor.

Hickory is the one used most just because it is harder burns slower and is easy to get.
But wood alone is not a good idea you will not get an even heat from the grill any wood should be soaked in water for a min. of 8hrs 24 is best.
All you actually want from the wood is smoke for flavor.
Also some charcoal has wood chips in it already.

Go to Target or Wal mart, to the bbq grill section. They have bags of wood chunks. Hickory is best for your purposes. You don't neel to use all wood. Soak your wood chunks in water for about an hour. Start your grill, if using a charcoal grill use a hickory charcoal like Kingsford, and add the soaked hickory chunks little at a time. Because they are wet, they will smoke and give a nice hickory smoked flavor to the meat.

natalie wood! LOL thats great!!! sick, but great!!!
ok, back to the bbq
uhm...what if the ladies want steaks and the guys want chicken...what f their isnt enough of one or the other, why not just cook it, and say "here it is...help yourselves" and let them decide what they want. the kids i can understand, burgers and dogs no big deal. as far as what wood...i cant tell the difference in any particualr wood so we dont waste the money, we just use either gas, here at home, or charcoal(match light)if we go to a park.

Mesquite can be used alone or with charcoal. Mesquite is usually available at Wal-Mart. The Mesquite tree is native to Texas.

any tree that bears a nut will have a strong flavor.

any tree that bears a fruit will have a light subtle flavor.

I would go with mesquite in your scenario its easy to get.

BTW charcoal will burn much hotter than wood, thus a better steak with charcoal. dont forget the Dale's marinade!
