I always wondered that myself. When I close my eyes and still awake I see clear images that fade and disappear only to be replaced by others. It is the oddest thing and I always wondered about that even when I was a child.
I don't know the answer to this question but, it is a damn good question.

It might just be what I call pre-dreaming. I often put myself to sleep by reading. There were times when I was reading with my eyes closed! But it was really just a dream that started almost instantly after falling asleep.

Hypnagogia imagery. See the source.
It is not a 'dream' because it is not associated with REM sleep, but rather, with entering the sleep cycle at all. During this time, some people's brains shut down in patterns that cause the sensory centers to be deprived of stimulation or proper inhibition of false signalling, causing heightened or illusionary imagery (or other senses).
Sleep paralysis is often, but not always, associated with such a state.

It is normal for people who have a very busy day. You have got to train your thoughts. It takes lots of will power to train your brain to shut off the busy day. You have a good , brain full of electrolites and at night when you lay down to sleep , try to visualize clouds. Or something very bland. Even just the clear blue sky. BUT keep your mind focused on that. Another good way is to recite a poem or better yet, a prayer that you have learned. Like say: Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep . Say it slow. Another good way, is to lay a clean wash cloth on your eyes. Just try to visualize an empty room or a green meadow with nothing in it. or a beautiful rose. One item and keep focused on that. Good Luck

I have them too, I love it, I focus on a little bright light in the middle of the darkness and it opens up into images and then its like i'm watching a movie, next thing i know i wake up in the morning. Its like I start dreaming before I'm asleep . enjoy.

its your mind going into REM, the time of night you dream, just before you fall asleep. It startles you so you wake up. Just go with the flow of the dream and follow it.

Most likely it's a dream, it is possible to have dreams right as you are falling asleep. Or else, your bedroom is haunted. :-P

It's just the start of dreams going in and out of consciousness. Nothing to be afraid of.
