My vet prefers to do it as soon as he lifts his leg to pee, or at 6 months, which ever comes first..He makes an appointment for the pup at 6 months, and tells the owner to call him for a sooner appointment if the puppy lifts his leg to pee before that time..

4 mos is too young. Wait at least until a year! Your dog needs the hormones produced by the testicles in order to mature properly both physically and mentally, same as humans. In fact people are starting to have vasectomies preformed instead of neutering. This accomplishes 2 things 1 controls pet population and 2 allows the dog to keep it's hormones which mother nature gave him for a reason!!!

4 months is the perfect age. We usually recommend neutering between 4 and 6 months of age. We like them to be big enough and developed enough to handle anesthesia and have some vaccines in their system before they come stay in the hospital, but have it done before they start those male behaviors like marking. Research has shown that dogs can safely be neutered at very young ages like 8 weeks old, and have no problems.

My vet told me as long as the puppy weighs two pounds it is OK, it's an issue with anesthesia. So the old rule of 6 months doesn't apply anymore.

Puppies and kittens at most humane societies come already neutered/spayed now.

Please discuss with your veterinarian. Most recommend 6 mos. There are rare cases of urinary incontinence when a dog is spayed too early. Neutering a young male may not have the same possible side effect. Best bet, let your vet tell you the best course for your dog.

4 months is too young! I got my puppy nuetered right at 6 mos. and he is just a little angel now! I thought that he would change but the only part that changed was that he became more loving and more attached to me!

for certain breeds like the rottweiler you should wait until they are about 1-1 1/2 years old to neuter because if you do it anytime before that it increases their chance of getter cancer by about 60%! but if you want to get it done wait until the puppy is about 6 months old

Some vets will spay/neuter puppies and kittens at 8 weeks. Check with your vet regarding his policies regarding this.
I had my puppy spayed at less than 5 months when she had some other surgery done.

Around 6 months is good. Let the poor thing hold onto his manhood a little longer. The worst day for me was when the vet called and said to me I could pick up my castrated dog. I felt bad for a long time.

We've always had our pets neutered or spayed at 6 months, but I think a quick call to your vet would confirm things for you.
