Yes, they are, but they contain tanins, which make them bitter, and if eaten in large quantities can cause liver failure. The tanin has to be washed out first..

There are two types of acorns, white oak family and the red oak family. The white oak acorns are produced every two years and are the best tasting and can be made into flour or boiled. The red oak acorns can be eaten as well but are bitter. Animals do not prefer them as much for that reason. Red acorns are produced yearly. Relatively easy to identify which is which. All red oak leaves have tiny spines at the end of the leaves.

Yes, in fact in times of deprivation, like the US Civil War, many people resorted to stretching flour by adding ground acorns. I have no idea if acorn meat or flour tastes good. My guess is that it is not fabulous since it has never been popular.

Yes,
You need to dry them, and salt them.. They are bitter as hell when green. Acorn can be used for food source, it does make a pretty good flour when ground.

I was unaware that acorns had meat, anyway, if your hungry enough (to the point of starvation)...I'm sure humans will eat just about anything.
