Depends on how long you stay. If it is just for a few weeks or a month, a visa is not needed. For longer durations (I'm talking months) you will need some type of visa. But just for a vacation you will be fine with just a passport.

A UK citizen can holiday up to 3 months (maybe more, I'm not sure) in the USA without a visa... a passport is all you need. :-)

Your passport should be fine. You can come to the U.S. on the Visa Waiver Program. You may want to have your return ticket handy to prove that you are leaving the U.S. after the vacation, just in case you get a hard time.
