Very Contriversial subject.
I feed mine the raw diet, and also i cook for my dogs.
I feed raw meat, fresh cooked veggies and even make stew for my dogs. I rescue dogs and this is what i feed them. Feeding them this diet for 10 years has saved me a tremendous amount on vet bills. I have had no allergy problems in my dogs, and they do not get worms no more so then normal.
My dogs fur shines and they have very white shiny teeth. If this diet is so wrong then why do i have a 19 year old sheltie that is still going strong?????????///

If u want to know the truth, the diet i feed my dogs is much better than the dog food u buy in your local grocer or farm supply. Least i feed mine fresh meat and they do not get the diseased cancerous euthanized sick animals that is put into the dog food. Not all dog foods are bad such as innova, wellness, solid gold, canidae, california natural, but I still prefer the diet i am feeding them. I do feed innova when my kids have to feed my dogs occasionally, but this is not very often. If u want to know more about the raw food diet do the research on it and go to the website of what is really in petfoods and u will see this diet is the besthttp://www.api4animals.org/facts?p=359&more=1

"actually, meat isnt good for dogs. we just spent over $300.00 at the vet only to find out our dog has 75% kidney failure, only because of eating meat etc. now, with his remaing 25% of functional kidneys, he gets to enjoy $60.00/20 pounds of vegetable dog food, by prescription only."

Actually, it is not meat in and of itself that is bad for dogs, it is if you feed meat to the exclusion of all other foods. Dogs are not complete carnivores, they are scavengers. They need not only muscle meat but offal (organ meat), bone, and veggies.

That being said, I'm not a fan of the raw diet. I probably would be if I lived in a perfect world where all meat came fresh from organic free range farms. However, I don't feel comfortable feeding my dogs the raw meat that you would get from a supermarket. Too much risk of illness. Also, there is an interesting article I put in my sources that is worth reading.

In my opinion, the best thing you can feed your dog is a homecooked diet, but only if you are willing to do the research into what makes a balanced diet. If you don't have the time to do that, stick with a good quality kibble. Flint River Ranch and Wellness are a food good brands that stick out to me. Avoid supermarket foods like Dad's and Kibbles 'n Bits.

A raw diet PERIOD, is the best you can give your dog. A good diet will consist of raw meats, vegetables, fruits, whole eggs, ground bones and grapefruit seed extract. This is called the BARF diet. Sounds disgusting but go on line and check it out. There are a few companies who make these foods and sell them frozen. I get mine from my local pet food store. You can also make your own. There is a book by Dr. Pitcairn that is full of recipes. The benefits of this diet are absolutely amazing!

No because it doesn't have all the nutrients that the dog may need. Then there are other problems, as the people before me have pointed out. Also raw meat is to easy to chew, and that can hurt his teeth in the long run (with a build up of plague or other problems). Dogs in the wild may eat only raw meat, but it is not the best diet for them. Since they are not designed to be able to eat grass and other crops they can't include those in their diets, and they only get some of it from their food.

Standard dog food does have all the nutrients that your dog needs to survive. In fact your dog can survive on just that food alone. This may not be true with the cheaper brands, but it is of the major ones. Changing between different brands of dog food can also upset his stomach. The more expensive brands of dog food are better digested by the dog, and produce less feces, but a dog needs fiber just as you do. It is best to stick with one brand of dog food, and feed your dog both dry and canned food. The dry food may be better for him, but canned food is closer to what his species is used to. So a combination of the two is the best way to go.

I wouldn't even give your dog raw meat as a treat. There are dog biscuits that will clean his teeth and include things that are better for him.

Don't risk feeding your dog a diet of raw meat, a mix of canned and dry food will be healthier for him, have fewer risks from the problems of raw meat, and it will be cheaper. Your dog will still like it and he will live longer on a dog food diet.

no! Dogs are no completely carnivorous, which is why you may see them eating grass sometimes!
They need a food that provides them with vegetables (yep) and minerals. Meat alone cannot do that.

Feed meat as a treat only, not as a staple of his diet.

They make frozen raw meat diets for cats and dogs. We buy the 8oz. patties for our cats. They're from Nature's Variety.

Raw meat is not good for any pet. Your best food is Iams or Petigree as they are formulated specifically for your dog. Also never give them fish as it can make them sick.
