My supervisor at work has taken a week off due to shoulder surgery. She said she broke/tore a ligament. A couple of months ago my friend had broken/torn a ligament on her ankle.

My question is: How do you know if you end up breaking/tearing a ligament. I do understand it hurts, but how do you end up doing this and how do you really know if you broke/tore one?

Just wondering... out of curiosity....

PAIN!!! Tearing a ligament is excruiciatingly painful...even pulling one, as when you "twist" an ankle. I tore a ligament, causing a small bone in my foot to break, while XC skiing and it tooks months to heal, after surgery. Ligaments have a weak blood supply, so they heal slowly. Also, there's swelling and discoloration and on X-ray, if there's no evidence of a break, it's either a muscle or ligament.

You can also tell if some ligaments are torn if you can't move part of your body. If you tear your Achilles tendon, your foot will point down-you can't flex it!

A ligament connects a bone to another bone. It involves the joint. If the ligament breaks completely or is torn the joint is compromised in some way. A doctor or other health care professionals do different tests or take different types of xrays to evaluate the situation. You can't tell by the amount of pain or bruising.

Well you can tear it many ways, from just over extending it and it stretches out too much or by falling on it the wrong way. You can find out if it is torn by having an MRI done. The Dr can then send you to see an Orthopedic Surgeon and they can do more tests to see how bad it is and determine if surgery is needed.
I hope this helps.

torn/broken ligaments in the knee may well be partly corrected with surgury. there is no thank you to fully restore a broken knee. it is going to constantly have some subject concerns because of the wear and tear. in specific cases the wear and tear may well be repaired adequate that the soreness will become in reality unnoticeable. Your Dr could have cautioned orthoscopic surgury to discover and attempt to repair the wear and tear.
