Actually, a better word is "skeptic". There are organizations like the skeptics' society, and magazines like "skeptic" and "skeptical inquirer", that take the exact approach you're talking about: they use science to investigate controversial topics in order to find proof (or disproof). Skepticism applies not just to religion, but to all human belief & knowledge. While they do deal with religious claims, much of their time is spent studying (and debunking) paranormal claims on anything from ESP to ghosts to UFOs.

An agnostic is someone who doesn't know whether god exists, and feels there's a pretty good chance the question could go either way. An agnostic neither believes nor disbelieves in god, he just doesn't feel he has enough knowledge to justify an opinion. (An atheist, on the other hand, is someone who is quite confident that there is no god). Obviously, agnosticism applies just to religion. Skepticism applies to a heckuva lot of other stuff as well, and would thus seem to fit your question much better.
