I'm a single mother of a bi-racial son, his dad is hardly ever around agencies around here are forcing me to choose his black race over his white should I raise him to view him self as a black man still knowing both sides of his heritage or what should I do. His dad is no help with this.

Look, I don't have all the answers, although sometimes I think I do. Maybe I do, that's besides the point. Also, I am not bi-racial, nor do I have kids. Here's where I tell ya what I think you should do. Forget about the so called "dad", unless he pays child support , then don't forget him. But your kid is Bi-racial. Let him grow up to be who he is. don't let either side choose who he is as a man, or who he becomes. He needs to learn both heritages. If your a single mom and your raising a kid by yourself you already have your hands full! Don't let anyone make it harder for you! Good Job and Good Luck!

This is really tough not knowing the neighborhood or the schools your son will attend. But generally I would think you should raise you son to be a good human being and not focus on the racial issue. He will be getting enough of that his whole life from both sides. Family is most important, not the racial issue, so be the best mom you can and involve him in family activities. Hopefully he will have grandparents, ants uncles, cousins etc.

raise him as your son.

The worls needs less "what side are you on" and more 'we are one'.

teach him that there are many races of people and that his heritage just happens to contain two "different" ones. He doesn't need to be told that he needs to chose which race he wants to be. He's a combo of both. He isn't one or the other and that's all you can do.

The agencies in your community need to lay off. There is too much racisim - from all sides. Some seem to have a hard-on for seperating everyone into skin tones again. Didn't the human race have this problem a few times before?

The global village is becoming smaller. we need to focus on people. Not black people, white people, asian people, hispanic people, etc. Just PEOPLE.

Stop thinking between black and white, he is both and raise him as both, you shouldn't have to pick either one I would raise mine to view himself as bi-racial, because that's what he is, right? Don't let some agency tell you how to raise your son, you don't have to mark which race he is, it's all optional, and if you do answer it, there's almost always a spot for other---bi-racial.

You said it yourself he is Bi -racial.. no need to choose. Besides he cant choose he is both. He should be brought up the way you think should be best for him, with your views on manners etc.

No need to raise him to choose a race.. just raise him to be a great young gentleman. that's all.

you shouldn't raise him as back or white, you should raise him as your son. skin is nothing but the outside, th inside that counts. I would give the agencies the middle finger and raise your son as a child, not as a black kid, or a white kid. when asked what his race is, just say "human" becausee he is part of the human race

You raise him to see no color at all. He's a mix so therefore he doesn't have one color to be more a part of. We're all some kind of a mix anyway, so he can be one of those people who just simply says that his parents weren't of the same race and he became the crayon that combined them. They may not have a box he can check for being combined, so I say he either checks them both or none at all.

You don't have to choose which heritage. If he is darker skinned, then he should possibly put African-American on any legal papers, but you can teach him whatever you like.

He should know both sides but since slavery times if you have an ounce of black in you then you were considered black and America is still in that mindset.
