Television takes up less calories than sleeping. Watching images flash by can make your brain think you are dreaming and put you into REM sleep faster than a glass of hot milk. Since you are totally used to seeing violence on tv, your body is not reacting to anything you watch with adrenalin, but you may be anxious normally and pumping up the adrenalin. Or maybe your body is compensating for extreme dieting with adrenalin rushes which mess with your sleep patterns, and TV and movies are the only time those levels are falling below normal for you.
Check into sleep apnea, especially if you snore at night. If you may have this, try sleeping on your left side for a while.
See if you can go in for a general check up, and ask the doctors to check your CBC/ electrolyte levels. If you are subsiding on junk food you could have low calcium and potassium levels. With a simple blood test the doctor can rule out any type of anemia, electrolyte imbalance, thyroid malfunctions, and infections.
You need to eliminate these things as causes before you allow anyone to just give you sleep aids or blow you off.
What are you waiting for, go get a physical and take this question with you. Doctors cannot read minds, tell him you specific problems. Insomia and sleep disorders are usually caused by some type of dietary or hormonal imbalance. A good doctor should be able to do this for you with the visit and follow up for under hundred dollars. You may have to negotiate the cost up front if you have no insurance. Tell the nurse you want to discuss an inclusive CASH price because you have no insurance. You would be amazed by what communication can do for you. I hope you have insurance and a grounded primary care physician.
Trying to figure this one out on your own would be hard. You would have to try taking calcium caltrate with vitamin and mineral supplements at night to start with, then at lunch and at night, so that your sleep cycle is aimed for the night time. Exercise and stay active during the day. Take the calcium with mineral supplement at night, 250 mg, no more than 650 mg. See if that works. Make sure to relax and don't eat anything within an hour of going to bed. Limit liquids within an hour also. Watch tv or read a book. Don't lay in bed waiting for sleep, instead empty your head of any but the most pleasant thoughts and day dreams. Once you get several good nights sleep you will be able to stay up during the day and evenings.
Aslo make sure you are eating enough protien, and vegtables at lunch an supper. They supply you with iron and minerals as well as vitamins. Helps your digestive system work also. Do not take antihistmines (dries you out, lowers your immune system, can make you feel depressed) or sleeping pills, but you could drink some herbal tea (lettuce, valeria, and or camomille). To boost your immune system you might take a vitamin E with a complete vitamin B/C complex.
Going in for a blood work is most advisable though.
Good luck.

Wow, I'm in the same boat. Whenever I'm watching a movie with my boyfriend, doesn't matter how great the movie is, I ALWAYS fall asleep. So weird. Even food doesn't help. And like you, I'd be wide awake if I wasn't watching the movie.
Good question!

Not this female! Unless it is totally boring any I'm not getting any. I will possibly fall out. But for real, I will find something much better than the movie, or just be gone!

You may want to see a doctor about your sleep problems. maybe there is something in your bloodwork that could explain it. Your idea for eating snacks, like popcorn, was going to be my suggestion... I used to drive long distances, and always munched popcorn to give me something to do.
If you are sitting around with your friends, perhaps you can change positions, or stand against the wall?
