Stews are a good choice for a large crowd. That may sound too plain and simple but consider that the classic French dish, Boeuf Bourguignon, is really just stew.

There's a good recipe for it here:http://frenchfood.about.com/od/regionalcuisine/r/bouefbourg.htm

Make it the centerpiece of a French themed dinner party.

Start off with some crudités (carrot and celery sticks, some broccoli and cauliflower florets, etc) served with aioli (garlic mayonnaise).

Serve the Boeuf Bourguignon with a simple green salad with a homemade vinaigrette dressing for your main course.

Then serve a cheese course and some fresh fruit in lieu of dessert or make the French classic Peach Melba (peach halves with vanilla ice cream and some raspberry jam thinned out with a tiny bit of brandy or water drizzled over the top.)

I had a gathering of 40 lb last year and made BBQ pork. A 14 lb pork butt made enough to feed an army...and I made brats to go with it. We had BBQ pork for days and then I still had to freeze some. It's a standing joke in our house that none of us will eat BBQ pork again!! Anyway, a 14lb butt at a Sam's club or something is VERY inexpensive.

Chili is also easy, inexpensive, can be made ahead and stays warm in a crockpot. Serve it with lots of toppings to make it special: sour cream, grated cheddar, tortilla chips, etc.

I know chicken breasts aren't cheap, but if you can get a really good deal on a family sized package, the recipe that follows is probably my favorite chicken recipe. You can make it in a few 9x13 glass baking dishes and it goes with so many different sides. My mom made this for about 50 people at my graduation (a VERY long time ago!!). I would factor 2-3 pieces per person (so 1/2 - 3/4 of a FULL chicken breast...that's both halves).

Bacon Wrapped Chicken with Cream Sauce
6 boned, skinless chicken breasts, quartered (4 pieces per full breast)
1/8 lb dried beef
12 whole strips of bacon, cut in half or 24 whole slices
1 can cream of chicken soup
½ - ¾ cup sour cream

Spray cake pan or baking dish with non-stick spray
Mix sour cream and soup in medium bowl. Spoon a small amount in the bottom of the dish.
Wrap each piece of chicken first in bacon and then in a piece of beef (the amount of bacon you use depends on your preference.). Arrange in baking dish.
Spoon remaining soup mixture over chicken.
Bake at 350 degrees for 2-1/2 to 3 hours (1 hour covered and the remaining time uncovered).

As some have posted, spaghetti is easy and not much more trouble for a large group.

Chili is one of my favorites and can either be poured out, ready made from a can or even from scratch with not too much more work. A small team can whip out loads of garlic bread and salad for side dishes.

How about roasting a huge turkey or making a lasagna or something. While I'm on it....Spaghetti and Meatballs is a low cost meal and can feed a lot of people. Also- Chicken fettuccini alfredo might be a good one. What kind of event is this for?

Stew. Lots of veggies, crushed tomatos, some potatos and LEAN meat. Cook it LARGE pot (10+ Gallons) for at least 8 hours on low temp.

Get a catering book from library on how to cook for so many people.

Both are good for you, each fruit/vegetable has different vitamins. And so as more variety, as better. Vegetables have generally less sugar than fruits.

Penne a la vodka is always popular at parties. Chicken marsala is also a good choice.
