Can't go wrong with a gift card from GameStop (at least $20)... unless his parents are the weird type that don't allow any video games in the house.

video games video games VIDEO GAMES! (or electronics :P)
the more i look around everyday it seems that teenagers are really really into electronics.
you can get him an xbox 360, a sony psp, or a nintendo DS. if he already has those then go buy him some games.
another good idea is an mp3 player. whether it be an ipod nano or a zen micro by creative. or maybe even a new cell phone that has a built in mp3 player and GPS system such as the chocolate by LG.
if he doesnt have a computer you can always get him that. or if he has a crappy computer and he likes gaming on it then you can always get it upgraded with a good graphics card, more ram, faster processor, ect.
if he likes skateboarding you can get him a skateboard. this would have been easier if you put some of his interests on here though..
if he likes art and has a computer you can get him an electronic tablet and a copy of adobe photoshop (and maybe a scanner too) so he can start his path toward digital imagery. or even just a nice art set and a canvas.
you can also try to get him a musical instrument such as a guitar, bass, or a drumset. or even turn tables..
teens like clothes too, and other useless crap. you can get him a prepaid credit card and drop him off at the mall and tell him to go nuts.
hope this helped!

Gift certificate for CD's MP3's. I just bought a cousin a personal vending machine for his 16th birthday. I got it on clearance at Target for only $25 (marked down from $100). It holds and chills 18 cans of soda. I would also consider a gift card to Dick's of other sporting good store or even to a clothing store.

Electronics are always a good bet. Give him a gift certificate for an electronics store or Amazon.com. This way he can choose what he would like for himself. A gift certificate says; "You are old enough to choose for yourself", without the carelessness of cold hard cash. $200-$250 is usually an acceptable amount, but if you can afford more go for it. Hope this helps.

Funny. My son is going to be 16 and we got him a cell phone. It is a chocolate by verizon with the ipod like music thing. IF you can't spend that much, try just a music download card. IF he is into sports, I would suggest anything with the Under Armour logo on it. If he is into hunting, anything with camoflage on it. Otherwise you can go the boring but tried and true gift of t-shirts from Hollister, Am Eagle, Aeropostale, Abercrombie and Fitch. Good luck.

Well I dont have a son or whatever but I know video games are always welcome or how about a box set of something he likes (i.e. the show 24), tickets to a football game or whatever sport he's into. Autographed sports stuff is good, jerseys, x-box 360, and good old fashioned money. That's all I wanted when I was 16 lol.

for a joke gift, give him a picture [from mag's[ of a real hot car with a note telling him this could be yours and you don't even know it....
for a real gift, maybe a gift card for cd's or dvd's
ticket to his favorite sports game, football, basketball, or baseball......
if he has a cell hone, give him a accessory for it or if he does not have one, give him a cell phone, some are a low price......

you could get him a gift certificate to a movie rental store, then he can rent video games and movies. mp3 players might be good to we spent $50 on a nice one for my step son last year, they store tons of music and you can download music too. or maybe a prepaid cell phone lots of people that age have one and with prepaid you don't have to worry about extra charges.
