I'm not sure if you mean 4 cyclinder as in economy cars, or just any regular passenger cars; there some very high quality luxury cars that are only 4 cyclingers.
I researched cars for a full 6 months and came up with one as the best 4 cylinder passenger car available based on looks, price, performance, gas mileage and reliability.... and the winner is!:
2003 Mazda Protege ES.
Protege has since given way to the Mazda 3; I would recommend either one.
Also, the Scions are worth a look if you're interested in something quirky and different.

Every car make and model have SOME KIND of issue.
How do YOU define a good car?...good on fuel?...handling?...safety?...size or convenience?...there are so many factors...At my dealership we try to figure out what the customer REALLY needs...and wants. Most of the time the customer really has no idea. We sell alot of north american product simpy because we find the customer gets more bang for the buck. Cavaliers and sunfires are pretty reliable...Neons...Focus....all pretty decent...If you want to be safe...take a powertrain warranty and you should be covered if any major expense should arise.
