I bought a Canon 750 some time ago for my daughter. It has been good: no problems, night shot is pretty able, steady shot is capable, simple to operate, good zoom range, came with a wide angle converter, charger etc.

I got it from Jessops of Leicester, over the net, and the price was less than the bottom of the range from Argos, so it was within your specified price, and was top of the range.

Well this is one i got from argos and it takes the SD card good for pictures. I got it 4 weeks ago and it was £499 but now its only £389 and it has a digital rechargeable battery. It also has an amazing 20 gb hard drive which for fantastic quality you talking 7 hours, good quality 14 hours, avg quality 28 hours. Well worth the money and with a 16 day no quibble money back guarantee you cant go wrong. I would personally stay away from Currys not great customer support.
