I asked this same question and got no credible answer. If God had to do it that way, he is not all powerful. If he did not, he made Jesus die for nothing. There is no way around this logic. This is just one of the serious holes in Christian theology.

Leviticus 17:11
For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one's life.
Hebrews 10:3
But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins,
4 because it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
Therefore God sent Christ the Perfect lamb to shed is blood to cleanse us unto eternal salvation

Doesnt seem right does it? An all loving God sending himself in the form of his Son to die for mankind to save them from the wrath of God himself? Furthermore, if suicide is a sin that will lead to eternal damnation, then this means that Jesus himself is burning in hell - after all, he sent himself to die, so this is suicide. It doesnt make sense.
So, while all the beleivers are in Heaven with the likes of Jeffrey Dahmer (who is a converted born against Christian who was formerly a gay cannibalistic murder), Ill be hanging out in Hell with Jesus and Ghandi and Budda.......

Jesus is God, it is its own blood. He did not needed it, it is just that in order for us to understand how God loves us he showed and offered the blood of his own Son, who is also God.

Sounds like a silly solution doesn't it? None of the explanations clear it up for me either, how about you? Not to mention he didn't stay dead and got an even better gig in heaven, sounds like nepotism to me.
I could never get this to make sense in my mind. Just one of the reasons I stopped believing
