pigeons are atually rats that have sprouted wings and lose their tail. Much like a butterfly from a worm, they go through a transformation. Hence the common nickname "rats with wings".

Baby pigeons grow VERY fast. For the first couple of weeks, they are extremely ugly and knobbly as all baby birds are. During this time, they are nest-bound. Then their development speeds up and all of a sudden, their feathers all come in, and they look like the adults, but slightly smaller. Have you ever seen a pigeon sitting next to another pigeon, making squeaking cries and shivering its wings? That's a baby pigeon asking its parents for food. They have to be quick about growing because they live almost exclusively around human habitation, and human pets find them a good source of nourishment. Don't want the babies sitting around in the nest until they get eaten.

My father used to have racing pigeons--reason why you don't see baby pigeons is because they can't fly yet and they are still in their nest. They will eventually emerge as adult pigeons like the ones you are used to seeing.

Baby pigeons stay in the nest until the juvenile stage(bird equivalent of teenagers), then they leave the nest and join the other pigeons. They are recognisable as they look kind of scruffy and unkempt and slightly smaller than adults.

I do. In fact on two different occasions we found a baby pigeon on the drive, we thought it had fallen out of the nest which was in the conifers. We telephoned the RSPCA who didn't want to know. We borowed a ladder from the neighbour which was a field away, it was pouring down with rain to put it back in the nest. later in the day it was back on the floor. Apparently the mother threw it out because it was ill or something. But she stayed with it on the ground in the pouring rain till it died.

Small baby pigeons stay in their nests until they are fairly big. Like any other bird, once they are big enough, their parents teach them to fly and survival techniques. You would have seen baby pigeons before but didn't realise because they are virtually as big as fully grown pigeons when they fledge. I know this as my ex-husband used to breed and race them.

The answer is the pigeons make their nests in the building struts of houses, railway buildings, bridges etc. They lay their eggs well out of sight and when the babies hatch, they stay in the nest very well loved until they are fully grown then they are literally kicked out and fly away.

Mostly because a pigeon builds a flatish nest and most of them fall out before they are big enough, and their parents are so dumb they haven't got the brains to find them
