if you go to the marines website, you should send them an e-mail telling them you want to find your grandfather and give them his name.

Have you checked with ALL of your family and extended family? Somebody, somewhere has a picture of him.
Also, all military records are on file with the military. I don't have handy just where the archives are located for the Marines. The Marines are a part of the Navy so the info will be stored somewhere in the Navy Archives. His picture may not have a picture of him in them but it is worth a try. You will have better luck if you can come up with his social security number and/or even a service number. You didn't say how old he would be, when he served or how old you are so I'm not sure what era he served in. As a start try looking for things like www.usnavyarchives.com and just keep spreading out looking for different web pages. There will probably be more web pages listed each time you access each one. Good luck. Pops

1. Try checking with other family members on his side of the family, they may have a picture or a lead that may help you. Ask your parents, aunts, uncles, grandmother, etc.
2. If he died in a war, try checking the memorials for his name. Such as memorials for the World Wars, Korean War, Etc.
3. Order a copy of his DD214 separation papers. Go to this page to find out how. Be aware though that it may take a while for them to get to you. Average turnaround is 12-14 weeks.

After you recieve his DD214's they will tell you a lot of things... Where he was stationed during his time with the Marines, The highest rank he recieved, dates of promotion, medals awarded, etc.
Good luck.

Oh kittyluv6906, how cute and sweet of you to be in that thought! I tell you what, you keep exploring all avenues possible - official and unofficial, and you may end up finding him. Also, use the internet to your advantage in this direction.
If all your efforts remain futile, then pick up a picture of your father or mother (depending on whose father's picture you are looking for), focus on that picture with full attention and meditate! You will end up seeing your grandfather miraculously! I am not kidding but pretty serious kittyluv6906 in suggesting this.
Good luck in your endeavors.
Cheers!

Sorry but unless a family member has a photo there will be a cost.
Call or write to all the aunts, uncles and cousins who would have known him years ago. It is likely someone took photos before he entered service. Most folks are afraid people going in might not come back and so photos are normally taked for remembrance.

Um, there is truly no thanks to inform him with out it being awkward. you basically said your grandparents bare.. it is awkward. actual, i'd not tell him. what sturdy will come from it? he will experience embarrassed and undesirable and also you may experience an analogous. that's more desirable proper in case you basically delete the picture out of your telephone and take his telephone back and turn the contacts so as that this does no longer ensue back. i do not truly imagine there is any aspect in telling him. basically be satisfied that your grandparents nevertheless have a wholesome, reliable relationship! sturdy success!

Search at your grandfather's secret place or go to his grave and see the picture or ask your father or mum.
