Because they think they are going to be scolded, or have their hands hit by a ruler, or that these HUGE red words will suddenly cover their entire computer screen which say: “GOD YOU’RE STUPID”! For spelling a word wrong....so, they won’t take that chance....can you blame them? (PS. Good question as I’ve wondered that myself)

First of all it doesn't always work. Some people here are not native English speaking, like myself. It makes me kind of tired if people keep on correcting me, while they do understand what I am talking about. For instance, I once used the word 'pinguin' instead of 'penguin'. They all knew what I was saying, but most people didn't answer the question but just went on and on about this little mistake. Hey, at least I'm trying to speak and write your language, the other way around mostly doesn't happen.
When I told people that spelling correction does not always work, I got comments like: "use a dictionary then!" Common, it takes a lot of hassle to do that for everything I try to say here.
So....., you might also ask yourself why it annoys you so much if people spell wrong. Instead of loosing your energy in getting annoyed, you might just get over that and try to see what they are saying.
The key-thing is that people try to communicate. Shouldn't that be valued more?
One more thing.. in my own language I have written for diverse magazines. One of them was a girls magazine. I got all these letters from Dutch and Belgium kids. In the beginning it annoyed me that Dutch kids speak very bad Dutch, while our neighbours spoke our language far better. I wondered myself what they teach kids these days on school. Anyway, very soon I realised that this was not about spelling, it was about reading the letters from these kids, and seeing what they where talking about. No matter if they wrote wrong or not.

For the same reason you didn't BOTHER to go back and capitalize the "t" in "DON't"
It was not worth the trouble.
If the intention and the message is clear enough, then the spelling matters little.
I, personally agree that poor spelling and grammar will influence a person's perception of the one giving the message. But, here, in Yahoo Answers, those niceties shouldn't matter.
If that kind of detail mattered to you, then you would not have depended only on "spell checker" to proof read your post.

who has the patience to write a long or message with the right spellings, then go through endless steps to rectify those mistakes. the human brain can understand a word by just looking at the first and last letters, so who cares about those in between???!!!

cause it's too annoying to do so
and most people on here mis-spell on purpose
like they use cuz instead of cause, b4 instead of before....
i think it's okay here but what'd happen if we do that on an exam?
