In the beginning religion had to fulfill several roles. It had to explain everything (science), help people with mental problems (psychiatry), help the sick (doctors), rule the people and settle disputes (government) and tend to peoples spiritual needs (spirituality). As we as a species developed a deeper understanding of these different aspects of life through writing down our findings and passing them on to future generations, we found that individuals needed to focus on specific fields of study.
We are becoming disillusioned with religion because they are still trying to hold on to all the roles they used to have and we know more than we did 100 years ago, not to mention 2446 plus years ago.I believe a restructuring is coming, spirituality is still needed but in a way that does not interfere but complements our other knowledge.

There is some truth to your statements, however peoples desires are confused. The actuall desire is for spirituality not religion. Religion was and has been swung like a sword to devide and conquer. This should not diminish a seeking of the spiritual baecause religion is dogma and people of the middle ages (and today) are crushed underneath it. The Protestants encouraged the reading of the Bible for the layman to get answers that the Catholic church surpressed with an iron fist. Religion is alive and well today with doctrinal writtings thicker then the Bible. With knowledge as you stated was missing, folks in the modern age are able to further question religiousity. The prevention of truth is still there, but the truth of God always prevails no matter how many corrupt and crooked people try to rule(whatever the generation). Good thoughts guy.

Agreed. But that's the way all those ancient civilizations did it. Their politics were their religions. And I believe Newsweek had an article on that very thing at the beginning of the year. Statistics show that the more intelligent a person is, the less they are involved in religion. I think this study was done with only 150 people, but it seems reasonable considering...

Religion will slowly wither away in the face of education and rational thinking. It will take time but religion will eventually become recognized for the absurd myth that it is, just as we look back now on people who used to worship the volcano god thousands of years ago.

Yes, it's no coincidence that the eldest son of a noble would inherit his father's estates whereas the younger sons had to become priests to avoid conflict. State and religion therefore went hand in hand to control the underprivileged.

Quite frankly I don't think people as a whole have evolved past the need to have hell fire staring them in the face in order for them to behave themselves.

I've always said that when religion and politics get into bed with one another, both end up pregnant, both get STDs.
