Yes, exhale on the exertion. To be more specific, exhale when you are contracting your abs by sitting up partially (sit up), straightening your arms (push up) and straightening your legs (squat), that is, when you are using your muscles.

Inhale during recovery, when you are laying back down (sit up), lowering your body (push up), and squatting back down (squat).

I personally inhale at the resting part of the exercise, and exhale during the exertion part. Never in my like have I jumped while inhaling. It's backwards. When lifting heavy I'll keep the air in til I'm at the top of the exertion then if I get stuck and run out of air I take smaller shorter breaths just to lift the weight those last few inches. when doing abs I exhale and flex more as I run out of air. I try to squeeze my abs toward my spine as I flex.

inhale while going up, exhale when going down. imagine u jumping. u would never exhale while trying to jump.
