Hey Joeys Girl,
I put 2 software packages sites below. One you purchase, is really good. The other is LDS Family Search free software. This will help you track your information and keep you organized.
The best sites will be the ones with postings where you can ask questions or gleen information from people that already asked the questions - and have your surname(s) in common.
You start with your VITAL RECORDS, birth, death, marriage, deeds, wills, probate, and extract all you can. Interview all your living relatives, and put the information in the data base software!
As you look at your family tree, you will see some branches get full quickly, and others need work. Concentrate on the branches closest to home that need work. This will give you a better sense of who you are genealogically!
As you get into this, you may want to get more specalized help. Try Cyndislist first - it has lists of lists of lists of genealogy help. Ethnic specialization, vital records, war records, etc - just a great place to get stuff.
GENFORUM, LDS Family Search, Roots, etc are all places to click around also. I noticed that this name is rare! There is not GENFORUM on it - you can start one.
I put some of your surname sites at the top of the list here.

You have been given lots of good websites, if you go to the LDS church website, you can also search for a LDS local church near you that may have a research center. Many of them do and keep census records, etc on site. They are also staffed with folks who would love to be of assistance.
A word of caution, verify any information before you add it to your tree. If you haven't invested in a software program, I urge you to do so. The Family Tree software usually comes with a trial of Ancestry and is well worth the investment. It also offers an online back up site. Good luck in your search.

Here's the free website at rootsweb which has the Social Security Death Index. Of course, this didn't exist before, what,
1920's?
You didn't indicate if you have any names beyond the last name.
If you do, You can order ($20 or so) a copy of the deceased person's APPLICATION for a Social Security Card.
And, may have been completed prior to the name change.....
The application may show the name BEFORE it was changed.

Good luck! Oh, there were 143 Cossaboons listed - all in NJ.

You can go to ancestry.com or genealogy.com and even though you'd have to pay to use them, the messageboards/forums are free. You may find relatives or if you put in the surnames someone may find you. I found a distant cousin on there and even got a couple of old pictures of Native American ancestors of mine. :D I posted stuff about a year ago and just recently my mom's cousin found me. If you do this kind of thing I wouldn't recommend changing your email so that people can still find you later. Good luck!

The Rootsweb WorldConnect internet site is a great thank you to start. this is loose and elementary to apply. bear in techniques that the counsel on their database became into submitted by making use of kinfolk historians at many tiers of journey. no longer all of the counsel is strictly maximum suitable, besides the fact that this is a sturdy beginning place. i've got faith the reason the instructor gave this project became into to introduce pupils to elementary elementary procedures to study. studying approximately elementary elementary procedures to seek and comparing the fee of categories of evidence is greater significant that the rather outcomes. bear in techniques that your loved ones's counsel could purely be shared to the quantity you an your daughter are delicate. I taught kinfolk tree on the college point for some years and became into greatly surprised whilst pupils revealed counsel that could have been left secret. A pupil's ancestor's crimes and sins are actually not the corporate of her instructor or fellow pupils. for college applications, this is okay to prune the kinfolk tree. If there's a Mormon LDS church on your community, pass to their kinfolk history Library. they are going to furnish loose types for recording your loved ones history and that they have got volunteers who would be happy to help your daughter start, they are going to enable her use their desktops to get entry to kinfolk history counsel.
