U probably arent letting them out to do their biz often enough before leaving.

In my own case, I have a doggy door, its worth every cent.
My dogs are 'freefed' in that I have a corner next to kitchen where their food & water is at.

My 4 dogs are very small pomerianians.

Only time its a problem on poop/pee is during snow/icey weather or 100+ heat.... shoot I would do it on the carpet if I was dog too then..

Training is key... the only normal weather time they do it is one one of my two females are in heat, the males go crazy and the poopee is a result.

Also, u are not feeding them right if their poop is smelly.
I can litterly sniff their poop and its only smelly when their buts are dirty (and usualy due to not trimming back there)>

Housetraining is in order. All dogs need to learn that the house is the den, not the toilet. The best housetraining book ever is Housebreaking: Pure and Simple by Mark and Dry Katz. It's short and simple and has everything you need to train any dog, large or small, young or old to be potty trained and you can get it for about $5.00 at Amazon.com. First thing you need to do before you do ANYTHING is get him a crate. The crate is for when you cannot watch him, even for a minute.

Sounds like seperation anxiety, very common in dogs. Why if you are walking some where like to the mailbox, take your dog with you. And if you are going to like work or something try a crate. Dogs will not poop or pee where there have to sleep.

If the dog only has accidents when he is alone, and has them nearly every time he is alone, it is probably separation anxiety. This requires the assistance of a professional trainer or behaviorist. Dogs with separation anxiety panic when left alone - there is no quick fix for it. If you feel that you can't work him, take him to a shelter; don't turn him loose to get hit by a car.

You dog poops because it isn't properly trained not to do so. I suggest crate training the dog (http://www.perfectpaws.com/crt.html) and then following the tether method (http://www.canismajor.com/dog/hsetrain.html). It doesn't matter what the age, all dogs can be trained.

usually because they don't like to be left alone and that's their way of telling you that . you might want to try putting the dog in a cage.
