For a long time I have heard environmentalists complain about all of the pollution caused by cars and how people should carpool or ride the bus. But I have yet to hear anyone complain about the big trucks constantly sending VISABLE pollution into the air. I have to take my car in for emissions inspection every year but nobody requires the trucks to do anything.

Actually... They ARE doing something about it here in the USA. Those big rigs are belching Sulfur particulate matter when under heavy loads from their Diesel Engines. I am 33 and over the course of my short lifetime I have seen the Diesel Engines get alot more clean burning in the last 20 years.

Also, the EPA is mandating that Diesel Fuel starting this fall be made with Dramatically lower Sulfur Dioxide. This new cleaner fuel for Diesel trucks will Dramatically reduce the pollution coming out of those trucks. As to the Diesel Cars on the road the EPA is mandating even lower emissions starting in 2008. The new systems will be almost as clean as gasoline cars plus get 20% better mileage.

Keep in mind when you see these trucks, and are thinking about pollution, The ratio of work done to the amount of fuel used. The average 'Big Rig' loaded down gets 5-5.5 mpg. The average car gets 22mpg. So the truck uses 4 times the fuel and pollutes 4-5 times as much... but it does 80-100 times the work! So the Relationship between the pollution and the amount of work done,... The Car you are driving is the Less efficient ie. Greater polluter.

that's a scam with the help of the automobile marketplace. There replaced right into a "gentle rail" device the position there have been trollies in various cities (no longer basically San Francisco.) besides the undeniable fact that the large nasty automobile marketplace offered up the trolley device, ripped out the rails, and put in a bus device in various cities. yet, with the creation of vehicles, many busses do not even run in small cities, no longer even Greyhound. i might want to assert lobbying has something to do with it. and they are no longer any diverse. higher, convinced, besides the undeniable fact that it truly is unlike your vehicle's steam-powered and a truck is administered with the help of a set of truck trolls. Buses are not dragon-powered. they're all inner combustion. Their manufacturers have basically lobbied to get a lot less-stringent rules for his or her emissions. and do not get me began on the smoke spewing from factories! Why do not they might want to get inspections on their emissions?

My guess is those over the road trucks are licensed in another state in which emission standards are not so high. Lots of them are licensed in Ohio for some reason, so I would imagine that's how they get away from the emissions standards.

Because big trucks (semis) are ran by Diesel, not ragular gas. and the diesel has less pollution to it then cars and small trucks. I never have to get my car checked out. why don't you try asking the place where you take your car and see what they have to say?

what you see is particulate matter we call SMOKE
it is what you don't see that is pollution.....

Starting on 2007 model trucks and diesel cars
the Sulfur content of the fuel will be down 80%
compared to 1972
so they ARE doing something about it.
But it will NOT change that dark puff of smoke you see when a truck accelerates....

I agree with you, I also live in an area with emissions testing. Why are the trucks exempt?
