In ArcMap how can I change the distance unit of measurement when doing a spatial join on nearest polygon?

Question

I joining block centroids to zipcodes. About 3K blocks don't fall within a zipcode so I'm doing a spatial join based on the nearest zip code. But after the join is complete the distance units are in decimal degrees. How can I change the output to Miles or Meters or something more meaningful. This is on ArcMap 9.1
