I would like to take my first cruise soon and just wanted to hear what a variety of people had to say about cruises.

First of all the first comment is not true. Cruise ships are dangerous when a person lets that stuff happen to them. While on a cruise ship you should take all security actions you would take if you were in a hotel or at home. For example don't leave your cabin door unlocked. This happens a lot and it is stupid that you think it is ok to do that. Don't get plastered drunk. If you are passing out and can't remember anything how are you going to remember to not get to close to the edge. And it's no different if you take an American Line or a Foriegn line. There are law specific to sea going vessels. Doesn't matter if you are on your own boat or a ship. I work for a cruise line. I have for almost 3 years and its a great way to travel, but no matter where you are alway keep your self safe like you do in your own home.

As for lines....

Not..
Carinval
NCL
They are cheap and dirty

Try...
Princess (for a younger crowd 20 - 40)
Holland America Line (FOr the older crowd 40+ or families with children)
Royal Carribean

Stay away from Norwegian. They are smaller and not that great. My favorite is Disney. If you don't have small children though, I would go for Carnival if you are in the younger crowd" and Royal Caribbean if you are in a relationship. Those have always been the best for me. Stay away from the older ships even if they have been refurbished. I have been on several and have always enjoyed a cruise. Just be safe like you would be anywhere and you will be ok.

Cruises are dangerous, and I'd never go on one. You are in international waters, and there is no law. If a cruise line employee robs or hurts you (or worse), they'll simply fire them and put them out at the next port. That's all the justice you'll get.

Many cruise lines are owned by companies outside America - that means you have no recourse under American law.

Be very careful if you choose to go on a cruise. Choose a company owned by Americans in America.

Royal Caribbean is probably the best. The ship is huge and updated. Facilities are clean. Staff is very friendly. Cruisers are mostly 35-60 range. You need not worry about kids during school seasons and it is the best time for the best price.

Bring some pepper spray (in your check in luggage). Keep it with you at all times. I've heard of rapes on those cruises. They hire wierdos, and they never prosecute.
