I feel ya! I can’t trust in a book that was written by people who say they were one with God, or guided/inspired by God to write it…..how do we know if that is true? Then to make matters worse half of the people that read it and claim to believe in it, especially some of those on yahoo answers, don’t even practice what they preach!……I too believe in a higher power, a God, BUT I don’t believe in following these man-made religions. When you think about it, every person that is religious (no matter what faith) strongly believe that their belief is right and that their bible, scriptures, books, guidelines, or manuals, are divinely inspired. Who’s to say that they are right? Who’s to say that they are wrong? We will never know the true answer until God shows up or until we die.

Some of the books of the Bible were written by people who spoke to God.
I disagree: I see the Bible as standing up for women's rights. See Num 27:1-11. Also notice that a man who sedces a girl has to pay for the right o marry her, even if that wasn't his intention, but a woman is not under any such restriction (Exd 22:16) and that a woman is presumed rapped if there are no witnessees to her deflowering and the man is killed without much in the way of a trial. (Deu 22:25) Also, it is the only book of law in the whole world that I know of that gives a woman the right to sue because a man refuses to marry her. (Due 25:9, also compare to Ruth 4:7 for what the removal of a shoe really means.) No such right is given to men; if a woman refuses to marry a man, the worst that could happen is she has to leave her father's house and make her own way in life, but a man could loose everything. I'd call that reverse sexism, if I didn't think God knew what he was doing.

If you're asking whether or not God "dictated" the bible to those who wrote it like many of these "Christians" believe, no, it didn't happen like that. Is the bible sexist? Of course! It wasn't until the 20th Century that women were able--and permitted--to stand on their own. Back when the bible was written, women were property and not valued property at that. Does that mean that the overall message or messages of the bible are worthless? Certainly not! You have to take the bible for what is was when it was written and understand the audiences for whom it was written. But you can't just dismiss it because some of what's in there is not good.
And what does men/women wearing skirts or not have anything to do with the bible and it's contents?

So… in your opinion, we shouldn't be good?
Have you ever noticed that God, all throughout the Bible, doesn't act anything like a man. Every action he takes is contrary to what the typcial human would do. If humans "made up" a god for personal gain, wouldn't that god be much more appealing to humans? Wouldn't they make it easy to believe in instead of the way the God of the Bible comes across time after time?
I'm only guessing, but… you most likely haven't read it from cover to cover have you? I'm not being rude, just stating what seems obvious.
The few dress codes that appear in the Bible were mentioned in letters written by Paul. Paul was not God or Jesus. He was an instructor for churches that were popping up in a society that existed 1,000 years ago - a society very different from ours. Jesus never talked down to women. Some call him the first women's rights advocate. You should really read it before you condemn.

I'm an atheist, so I obviously don't believe that the Bible (or any other Holy Book) has been dictated by God.
But I tend to understand people who believe in a supreme being but who do not believe in the Bible. I believe the Bible is a book written by men who wanted to set rules. There are a lot of good things in the Bible and in other Holy Books, because they give people directions on what is good and bad (don't steal, don't kill...) but it can't be interpreted literally. And, I agree, it's sexist.

Anything that is more powerful (evil or good) than humans is a considered "higher power".
God did speak to those who wrote the Bible. The Bible says so and the Bible does not lie. It is a supernatural book.
The events and people it tells of are historically correct and nothing in it has EVER been disproven.
Check it out.
Oh and btw...there were some pretty awesome women told about in the Bible too. Look up Queen Esther.

no, the bible was written by men who recieved the word of God because no one man can stand to hear his voice for an extended period of time, the human body cannot handle it. God therefore couldnt hold a meeting and say hey, humans do this... he has it written. It is slightly sexist but I am a woman and am not offended god had to try and cover every possibility so as not to have to re-write it when times/people/trends change.

No, the bible was written by holy men of old as the Holy Spirit moved on them and told them what to write. Men didn't wear skirts, them my have worn robes. Women are told to dress modestly and not to try to look like a man. You are free to believe what you want, but just because you don't believe in it, doesn't mean its not true. Peace.

The only thing that gets me about the bible is the fact that it is "God inspired." Very few people ever "Spoke to God", most were given the power of tongue, or prophecy or even images and visions. My thing is How do you know it was really Inspired by God? People write to this day that what they have written was inspired by God, that what they say God told them to say, or that god came in a dream to them. Most of us roll our eyes and are usually like "yeah right!" but why do we believe everything written thousands of years ago, by men who claim to have been "inspired by God"? Why dont we roll our eyes and disbelieve everything they read. Dante wrote "dante's Inferno" based on a vision he recieved from God...I think its a nightmare he remembered but he felt it was from God. Next thing you know the Church is teaching doctrines based on Hell.

You're mistaken. Muslims are the ones who believe that God dictated God's words into a person's ear. Well, Bible Belt US also believes that concernign the Christian God, but hey, there's no difference between the two. The Bible actually contains different accounts of a collective effort to discern God's will and unfolding revelation in human history. It's a dialogue between God and those who want to engage him/her in a relationship. Hence its richness.
