A circuit judge will normally be allocated to an area and will sit in a number of different crown courts in that area, as required. He/she may also be asked to sit in the magistrates court from time to time.

A high court judge has the authority to sit in the court of appeal i.e the criminal appeal court, Queens bench division of the high court etc.

The judges are appointed by the department of constitutional affairs, this used to be the Lord Chancellors Department.
