check out some farms - go driving in the country. a lot of times there will be barn cats who have a litter of kittens by surprise, so the farmers want to get rid of the kittens.

FREE kittens are not always a good deal. You SHOULD pay to get them spayed or neutered, they may also be sick or have fleas or ticks, and all Kittens need shots.
if you ADOPT from the HUmane Society - shots, neutering and spaying are often what the adoption fee COVERS.
please consider adopting a pet from a shelter - then you know they have been checked fully by a vet, have gotten their shots and will be ready to be fixed - to keep more unwanted pets off our streets.

Ya know, the adoption fees are worthwhile. It's not just them trying to stiff you. When adoption centers get cats in, they pay a price for it. A lot of the time, they rescue cats from local animal control shelters, which costs them money. Even if it's an owner surrender or stray, they get most of its veterinary care up to date. They spay/neuter, give them thorough exams, worm them, deflea then, and get them up to date with shots. Some even come already microchipped.
So you're not just paying for the privelege of taking the kitten home.....you're reimbursing the rescue center for the money they've put into the cat. Money that YOU would otherwise have to spend for the kitten's care.
Think about this for a minute; we adopted our male cat a year ago. Our local humane society had just rescued him from animal control.....which cost them $20 bucks. They hadn't paid for any medical care for him yet, so they only charged us the $20 it took them to get him out, plus a $25 dollar neuter deposit (once we had him neutered, we could get it back....although, I didn't bother, I just let them keep it). So you see, if I'd taken back the deposit, they wouldn't have made a profit at all.
US, on the other hand.....we spent about $200 bucks in vet bills over the next 3 months. We had to have him neutered, microchipped (which was only $26, not a large chunk), and we had to get him all of his shots. Plus he had ear mites, so we had to pay to treat those.
You can get a cat for "free".....it's never REALLY free.

Go to a shelter. I know you said free, but the price they charge usually includes all the first round of shots, microchip and/or spay/neuter. You would pay more for those things at a regular vet. And if you were not planning on shots and spay/neuter costs then you shouldn't really be having pets, so I'm sure you were counting on those things. : )
A pet is a commitment. Would you surrender a bad child? Maybe the shelter is right....

Have you tried the local ASPCA? You can probably get a kitten there for free, but even free adoptions are not entirely free. You usually have to pay a small fee for the shots and neuter/spay.

You'll be better off adopting a cat. Typically if you get a kitten for free, they don't have all their shots yet so you end up having to pay anyway.

it worries me that you don't want to pay for an adoption fee. are you going to have the money to properly take care of this kitten?
