Any time your body must work to maintain an ideal temperature you burn additional calories. Not only when it is cold, but also when it is very hot.

I recently heard a theory that a contributing factor to the rise in obesity in the USA is because more and more people live and work in climate controlled environments.

yes ... especially if you're dressed for warm weather!

I believe a stat was reported that researchers at the south pole typically require 2-3X more caloric intake due to the prolonged exposured to cold.

i think it burn less... than hot weather.
