I'm looking for a economical suv with good gas milage to "truck" a family around, no towing.

A dog. I'm waiting for the Jeep Patriot. Same engine but better looking, a kind of economy version of the old Jeep Cherokee.

But neither the COmpass nor the Patriot can tow very much.

I liked them a whole lot until I saw one in person...

I guess it depends on what you will use it for. Are you needing decend gas mileage? How about towing ablity? Or do you just want an SUV and still have the horsepower and torque to beat on it when you want to?
