Because when you study the Bible and religion in general (as I was forced to for 12 years of Catholic schooling) you see how much of a farce it is.
Anyone with an IQ of 50 can figure out that there is no such thing as God, heaven, hell or any of the rest of that outdated voodoo.
Believers are so blind that they are most likely too scared to even take the time to contemplate exactally what it is they are being told to believe in. If they would, most of them would become athiests and 75% of the problems in this world would go away.
No athiest has ever detinated a bomb in the name of their non-god.

This a broad generalization but there is some truth to it. The fact of the matter is, many atheists only become atheist after thoroughly studying many religions. They then come to the conclusion on their own that none of them are true. So, in this case, studying major religious texts, including the Quran and the Bible, is sort of a requirement for being atheist.
Studying these texts is not a requirement for belonging to these faiths, however; one must only be born into a Christian or Muslim family where one will be innundated with information (be it true or false) about that religion without having to read it on his/her own. Given the above, it's not surprising that many athiests are more informed about religious texts and history than actual members of the faiths.

Atheist were once religionists who having read their religious books deeply began to puncture holes on what they once took for granted.
It is easier to believe than know. Belief does not require expending energy while knowledge requires time and labour. Most people prefer the perceived easiest and shortest solution to problems and difficulties.
Human brain is divided into 2 lobes. One lobe the left lobe handles our logical thinking or reason. While the second lobe, the right lobe deals with irrational thoughts and emotions.
Those who possess a more developed left lobe seems to be rational and are mostly Scientists or Phillosophers. And therefore by extension are mostly Atheists. On the other hand, those with more developed right lobe tend to be irrational. These irrational are ofcourse mainly the -born again Christians or Islamic Jihadists. The religionists in general, if you like.

Your question is based in absolutely no proof whatsoever. You are being very rude to the believers that have actually read the Holy Bible and the Holy Qu'ran. The Muslim holy book is the Qu'ran not the bible which just shows your ignorance to other people's faiths. Do not be so narrow-minded, we're here to ask questions and give answers all in good humor and in a civilized way. Try not to make such rude assumptions.
BTW, I was raised as a catholic but now I'm an atheist.

It seems that when you refer to christian, that you mean anyone who would call themself a christian rather than a person who is a practicing christian. Most of my fellow beleivers are very wellinformed on the teaching of the Bible and read it nearly daily. As for Islam, I don't follow that teaching so I'll leave it to them to answer for themselves
Here's my question. Why do I know more about atheism than most athiest?

I have never met a true atheist in my life and I doubt I ever will. I have never met a self proclaimed atheist that knows anything except a verse or two from the Holy Bible or the Koran.
I don't think you have asked information from true followers of any religion if you are not getting answers unless your questions are confrontational in nature.

Many atheists grew up with a strong religous presence. They chose for themselves the path of nonbelief.
My husband went to christian school for 12 years. He knows more about the bible than ANY christian out there. He is one of the strongest atheists I know.

I disagree with this statement. I not only read my bible...I study it.
When someone give a scripture reference, I check it out. I also read the scripture before and after to clarify it's not taken out of context...sometimes, reading the entire passage.
I don't want to be deceived by some twisting God's word for their benefit or point.
Perhaps you might consider doing the same?
What is your source for your statement?

It depends on who you ask, whether or not they know the bible or Qu'ran. I know people that have the whole Qu'ran memorized...it's rather amazing.
Most atheists don't know the whole bible (some do), they know the parts of the bible that suit their needs, similar to the believers, who know the parts that suit their needs.
My suggestion, only engage those who know in an intellectual conversation.

I've read my Bible from beginning to end multiple times. And I know a lot of Christians who have done the same.
Atheists are not informed about the Bible. If they were, they would know that the Bible says, "The fool hath said in his heart, 'There is no God.'" Psalm 14:1
