I have a 1999 Oldsmobile Bravada SUV, and not counting reliability, I love it. It's comfortable and luxurious, functional and rides great, and has a ton of features hard to find on a regular SUV. It's like a mini-escalade. However, it's been in the shop a ton, for a few major things and a few moderate, one of the major things being a major defect in the fuel injection system that GM refuses to recall and rather makes the customers pay for. I test drove a Nissan Pathfinder and a Toyota 4Runner SR5, and the pathfinder doesn't have enough room and rides horrible. The Toyota rides ok but has an uncomfortable seat. Is it worth it to go Japanese next, are they that much more reliable that it's worth sacrificing comfort and ride? Honestly no other truck-based SUV I've ever driven (and i've driven most of them) rides as smooth as my Bravada, but I also want a reliable vehicle. I'm not sure what to chose next. I don't want a car-based SUV so Highlanders, etc are out.

We have a Blazer, same thing as a Bravada just Chevy's brand, and I love how it rides and we haven't had any problems(not caused by the previous owners - mostly cosmetic). I don't think you will find the comfort in a "Japanese" car like will in "American" cars. Maybe check out other years of GM SUVs. I know the Izusu Rodeo's are very comfortable inside, and although its been a while, I believe they drive/ride very nicely. I don't think that you would have less problems with a Toytoa or Nissan. Every maufacturer has things, mostly year specific, they don't want to fix. I'd find an SUV that you think is comfortable and go with it. Either that or find a different shop that may be a little more efficient fixing the Bravada type SUV's.

I would recommend Japanese. Most SUV's comparable to what you have are not that reliable. The Chevy Trailblazer (aka GMC Envoy and Saab 9-7) have not had great reviews for reliability and in fact, if you go to some web forums you'll see some pretty disgruntled owners.

I've owned a couple of Fords. Big mistake, never again. In fact, the Ford dealers in my area are terrible about not contacting people who may be interested in buying their cars. I guess Ford's sales are so great (never mind the impending cutback of almost a quarter of their production due to NO sales) that they don't have time to waste on commoners who want their car.

Taking out GM and Ford, you may be left primarily with Toyota for a truck based SUV. The 4Runners are not comfortable in my opinion (seats sit too low to the floorboards) but have been known for reliability and high resale.

Hard to say if they're actually more reliable; my wife's '97 Nissan Pathfinder seems to be having as many mechanical problems as your Oldsmobile.

if you want to go big(luxury cars only) than any thing American car is good, comfortable. if u want to go mid or small size u can also look at Audi's and Saab's. Japanese still are the most reliable
