Show him the litter box. He's never used one before? If not, you might end up with a few accidents....but cats really do prefer litter to anything else because it allows them to bury their waste.
Just make sure that if you have any plants in your home, cover the soil with small rocks so the cat can't dig and go in those. Given no alternatives, he should pick the box over anything else. Just make sure he knows where it is.

Most cats instinctively know what to do, but to be safe, provide him with multiple boxes with different kind of litters so that he can pick one he feels comfortable with. Have an uncovered box and a covered box, sand litter, and clay litter, maybe pine or pellets, and sprinkle a little dirt from outside on top. This should give him the idea. Put the boxes in quiet areas of the house so he doesn't feel threatened. When you see he's taken to the boxes, you can pick the one he likes best and put it in a location he is comfortable with. If he seems adverse to the box, close him in a bathroom or other tiled area until he gets used to it. Never interrupt him while he's using it, as it could turn him off the box entirely. If he makes a mistake, never scold him, but soak it up or pick it up and then put it in the box as a hint. Use enzymatic cleaner to clean up messes thoroughly and remove the scent. Keep the boxes REALLY clean, as he's used to a clean "bathroom" anywhere he wants it. Shouldn't be a problem, but good luck anyway.

The same way you would a kitten, any accidents they have put the poop in the litter box, and show them the poop by having them smell it. Also putting him in the box frequently and scratching the litter with his paw works. Eventually they will get it . Usually they will catch on quickly.

You don't have to train him. Make sure the litter box is kept clean and that he knows where it is.

Cats are creatures of habit; once he eats; give him a few minutes, take him where his potty box is, and put him in it, EVERY TIME HE EATS. This may take several days, but he will get into the routine. (it is best to have it in the bathroom, so you can just shut the door til he's done.)
