It's a "star" mentioned in Revelations that's supposed to fall upon the earth and poison the waters. There's speculation that it would be a comet that falls to the earth, but disintegrates prior to impact, scattering particles pretty much worldwide.

There was some thought, back when Chernobyl exploded, that this was "Wormwood," based on a not-quite accurate translation of the name.

Absinthe is distilled with the fleshy parts of wormwood (leaves, mostly), not the bark.
