Travelling through Europe on a budget..me and wife will leave Venice at 6.30 and reach pisa at 11.30. We intend to just visit the Leaning Tower and take a train at 5 pm. Do we need to take a tour or can we just manage by ouselves? In November are ther long queues for entering...how much is the entry charge??

there are prices, opening hours... of course you can manage your tour around Piazza dei Miracoli but to go to the top of the Tower must take a tour (30 minutes)... have fun!

5 and 1/2 hours to see the tower, sure can. Pisa is a small town. The tower is walkable from the train station.
I did that a few years ago in around that time frame between my train trips as I did it as a day trip from Florence.
Visually not that spectacular. Just must go cos its well known.
Just do it yourself, you will manage it fine.

are you planning on climbing the steps at the tower?
In november the lines will not be long at all.
you will not need a tour guide at all. you will have plenty of time to see the grounds as well.
