a crime is breaking the rules. If there are no rules there is no crime

Yes. Because then everyone will does what is right in their own eyes. Each one will have his or her own rules. In your eyes, it may be ok, but in another is would be a crime. But who is correct? In the climate where there is no law, the one who is correct normally is the one with the biggest gun.

By definition, if there were no rules (laws) there would be no crime.

In this case, everyone should be answering "NO". You can't break a law that is not there.
