Outside of the national Guard being deployed, No, there is no one unit designed for homeland security. But, can you imagine someone trying a Ground-Invasion of the United States? There are more privately owned gun's here than the Military has, lol. I think an invasion by any country against us would not only be futile, but suicidal! Ever read the bumper-sticker, "They can have my gun when they pry it from my cold dead fingers", well, that would most likely be the case. It would be unwinable for anyone who tryed. Nuclear weapons, a different story all together. No-One would win. But ground invasion, never going to happen, rest assured. Hope this helps you rest easier. God-Bless America. 1st. The newly formed Northern Command, a joint command, is responsible for defense of the continental US. Should the need arise, all US forces currently within the US would fall under that organization for tasking. But no specific Army or Marine division, corps, or any other unit has that specific mission all the time.

NORAD is the prime defender of North America, however there is more than enough Military available in reserve to protect the continental United States. People underestimate how much Military is in reserve still...for instance the U.S. maintain a force of over 160,000 In Germany which can be recalled within hours under domestic emergency.

that's Alaska. The continental usa is a term bearing on the united states located on the North American continent. looking on utilization, it could mean the two: the 40 8 contiguous states plus the District of Columbia; or the 40 8 contiguous states plus the District of Columbia and Alaska. the 1st definition is greater classic, decrease back to in the previous Alaskan statehood, and is the traditionally used definition. the 2nd definition is the technically perfect definition because of the fact Alaska is likewise in North u.s., northwest of Canada. In the two senses, Hawaii – an archipelago southwest of North u.s. contained in the Pacific Ocean – is excluded.

I can't remember the exact number but at any given time there are 3-5 divisions in the lower 48 states. But who's protecting the US, it's the US Navy and Air Force. Don't forget anyone who wants to attack the US has to cross two very large oceans.

True but the Continental United States as we knew has already been broadened to include all areas upto Iraq and Afghanistan! And, US Army is reportedly considering redrawing the map of the world accordingly!

It would be the duty of the National Guard, under the direction of the State Governor where the invasion took place. Eventually Congress would allow the President to nationalize the guard and mobilize other units to defend our country. The US Military is not allowed by law to operate in the US unless by presidential order and the consent of congress.

the military cannot be deployed in the US without congressional approval anyways. but I believe the intent of the National Guard was for homeland protection although that idea seems to have gotten lost somewhere. I would not worry to much about it. It would be very hard for any amount of mass military force to attack the continental US. we would see any large number of troops before they could get close.

No, but the National Guard and US Coast Guard are solely designated for that purpose.
