A classic martini is more of a before dinner drink. It's an aperitif to stimulate the appetite. The after dinner drinks are more dessert-like.

It depends on the flavor of martini. I would said any of the sweet ones, chocolate, watermelon or coconut, would be after dinner drinks. The classic martinis would be before or during dinner drinks.

A classic gin or vodka martini is usually a before dinner cocktail, but some of the popular new ones (like chocolate!) seem more like after dinner drinks to me.

Before. Unless it is a super sweet martini cocktail then it's better to have after.
