It depends on what you wish to measure against. The level of world peace, economic prosperity, mortality?

Lets say 2000 years ago, the Roman Empire controlled two thirds of the planet and there were fewer wars. But in those days, Rome survived from enslaving the nations that were conqured. Under Roman rule, life was great - for the rich few. 90% of citizens lived in terrible poverty, where they could starve to death unless they chose to eat the chicken bones in the gutters. In those days, people died at very young ages. I think a ordinary man would live to mid 40s.

Today, world economies are indirectly controlled by the American 'empire'. The free world is more prosperous and scientifically advanced than ever before. People live twice the life-span that they did in biblical days. Although it is written that many patriachs lived for 200 or 300 years old, this probably was not the norm back then.

Apart from all the wars, we are probably better off.

That all depends on where you live, your standard of living, etc. In biblical times, they did'nt have the luxuries that we enjoy today, such as electricity, fast transportation, easy to purchase foods, etc. Also they had slavery, no proper sewage system, no painkillers, and so forth to make life more miserable. Life basically sucked back then.
As for today, we have increased population growth, which brings increased cancer and other disease rates. We have a large variety of foods, but quality foods are lacking more. We have luxuries that we can enjoy, but are deep in debt. We're more efficient in killing, especially in mass scale. The family unit has a difficult time staying together (you know, mother, father, children, and maybe grandparents all working together for the househole).
Also the morals of people are going down the tube. Also, to satifly the increased population, we're wiping out more forest, fish, animals, etc. at an alarming rate.
Hmmm....tough to say which is better, but for me, I rather stay in this century given a choice.

It was bad then, Jesus said, we live in a troubled world.

Sin has gotten worse...people more perverse.

I think probably now, since we are more populated.

All is good, I'm facing the future with God / Jesus on my side. It's all going to work out!

((I've read the end of the story and I'm victorious!!!))

Times were worse then because they did not have Jesus who die for our sins. They had to make animal sacrifices and follow the Law. There were so many laws it was like living in California.
Peace

There is no relevance between now and then. We are heading into WWIII and once that occurs, life as we know it will cease to exist. It will be a new dawn for man...it's hell starting over.

Back then.
No running water.
No indoor toilets.
No showers.
Outdoor markets that you had to walk to.
No cars.
No CVS.
One doctor and he was miles away.
No buses.
No phones.
No TV.
I think that covers it.
