JoAnna, can you be a little more specific about what kind of "botany" you want to do? My answer might be quite different depending on what you say. For example, the amount of training you need to be a horticultural botanist or horticulturalist will be different to the amount you need to be a plant conservation geneticist or a plant systematist.

depends on what level of botanist you want to be (not trying to be a jerk...) or your desired career.

a friend of mine in grad school relayed from his father that the drug company he worked for hired people with a bs in biology/botany to water plants in green house.

if you want to do some level of research i'd assume you would want a master's degree, or a ph.d. if you're really ambitious.

depends on what you want to do.....there are many fields in botany and many different jobs.
For conservation /ecology/ biodiversity field of botany, I think one can find a nice job with MS (if you are lucky, even with a BS).
But any molecular /biochemical /physiological type of research really requires a Ph.D / post doc level.

PS> when you get your BS, come to my lab :-)

4-year B.S. degree to start.
You can work for the govt, gardens, zoos, etc.
I love plants myself.
I can tell you that the San Diego Zoo has the
most diverse plant specimens in the world.
