I just bought a new tacoma yesterday. I was reading the owner's manual and it said to keep the "key plate" in a safe place because in case I lose the keys I can go to a toyota dealership to get keys copied by giving them the number. However, my keys never came with the key plates or the numbers. So isnt it suppose to come with it and what should I do?

1st of all congratulations on you new vehicle purchase!

2nd thank you for taking the time to read your owners manual (too many people do not do this)

& finally to answer your question: Most manufacturers these days no longer use key "plates"
They now use a little square, white, plasticky, paper thingy, with the key codes (numbers) & a bar code on them.
These are probably attached to one of your keychaines
.
If not ...just call the sales person & they should be able to tell you where to locate the "key plate" as described in your owners manual.

Enjoy your new vehicle !

Go back to the dealer and ask them why you didn't receive yours, it is a small metal plate about 15mm long and 5mm wide with a code stamped on it. It should have been on your key ring when you got your car.

contact Toyota and explain the problem.......they should be able to ascertain the key codes from your serial number, (VIN) so have it handy......also, some dealers, (particularly the one that sold you the vehicle) "may" have them on record as well.....The reason I know this, is that I once repoed cars for a living, and often got the codes from the dealer's themselves.
