Carmax is just like any other dealer. They lowball your trade-in and overprice the ones they sell.
But they do make it easy for you to sell. Most dealers won't even talk to you if you're not buying.

I've "dealt" with Carmax many many times but in a MUCH different way than your question .But I think my answer will give you some good insight.
I sell at a new & used cars at an auto mall (12 Manufactures) located very near a Carmax store.
They bring their 'newer' vehicles to us for servicing under the manufacturer warranty because we are manufacturer authorized. They are not.
Their 'salespeople' are more like 'clerks'. They have only basic general knowledge about their merchandise.(ie : "let me show you a :blue, 4 dr, SUV, in your price range)
vs a Product Certified Sales Consultant:that can show or tell you all the information about a vehicle. (ie : "Would you prefer a v6 or do you need a v8 to tow 7200lbs ? Will you be needing to seat 5 passengers or 7 ? This one has a 5 star crash test rating, and that one has only 2 stars. ........fuel economy ratings ....specifications .....dimensions....recall info...warranty info...etc ..etc...etc)
Carmax 'clerks' cannot possibly have all the information about a vehicle that you may require.
They may have a broader selection of vehicles to choose from because they can & do transport vehicles from their other locations.
They occaisionally may pay more for your trade in than another dealer, but they can make up the difference by charging more for the vehicles they sell.
We always research their prices & make sure that we are lower priced.
I have always been able to beat their 'deals' & beat their finance rates.
So the "moral" of my answer....
go ahead & 'shop' at Carmax, see what they have to offer...but you may get a MUCH better deal by actually purchasing a vehicle from a NEW car dealers 'used' car lot.
Besides that, wouldn't you rather purchase at the same place that will be servicing you & your vehicle ?
btw..I have occaissionly suggested to my clients that they sell their vehicles to Carmax (only if I am unable to pay as much ) but they can still buy my vehicle . And that has worked out well for them.

I've bought from Carmax, and my sister has bought from them also. They're biggest advertisement is the " No haggle price" which means they have investigated the local prices and the value of the said vehicle and gives it the lowest possible price. Personally, I bought a 99 Explorer, and the price on the sticker was 16,995. I ended up paying 14,995 for it. If you haggle they'll respond. Just don't let them tell you they can't. Every car dealership in the country adds a "fluff" to the sale price to cushion hagglers. This way they still get what they want for it. The common "fluff" is $2000.
