I know that I need the codec to play the video but they will not install. and that videolan will not play the movie also.

Just right click the file (.asx, .avi, etc) and point to Open With... and then click on Choose Program... (a window apperas) Select Windows Media Player in the list and just below you will see a checkbox saying "Always use the selected program ...". Check it. Click OK. Next time when you double click files with the same extension it auto opens in wmplayer

Go to one of the files of each type. Right-click on the file. Select "Open with..." In the Window that appear select "Choose Program". From the list that appears select Windows Media Players. At the bottom of the list is a little box that says "Always use the selection program to open this kind of file". Check that box. Now all files of what type you started with will open with Media Player

my suggestion is to get video lan from videolan.org its great software and works almost everyfile

you need codex that support all this files
